PRESS RELEASE

« University Students Simulate a North American Parliament in Mexico City»

Montreal, May 18, 2006 – The second edition of the “Triumvirate”, the only parliamentary simulation in North America, will take place in the Mexican Senate from May 22 to 26, 2006. Organized by the North American Forum on Integration (FINA), the event will bring together about 70 students from twelve American, Canadian and Mexican universities.

For five days, participants will discuss hot political topics affecting North America: immigration, the NAFTA dispute resolution mechanism, student mobility and the creation of a North American Investment Fund. Some participants will play the role of legislators, others will act as lobbyists while yet others will publish a daily newspaper that will cover the debates.

As a pioneer on the political scene, the Triumvirate seeks to bring together future North American leaders to increase their awareness of the issues that characterize North American relations while enabling them to develop a better knowledge of democratic institutions and the realities of the member countries of NAFTA.

“The simulation enables participants to delve into the heart of the North American political dynamics and to negotiate draft bills that, we hope, will inspire our political leaders,” declares Christine Fréchette, executive director and founder of FINA.

This second edition of the Triumvirate is jointly organized by the North American Forum on Integration (NAFI), the Mexican Senate and the Instituto tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM).
This event enjoys the support of several partners: the International Development Research Centre, the Office Québec-Amériques pour la jeunesse (OQAJ), the Ministère des Relations internationales du Québec, Export Development Canada (EDC), the United States Embassy in Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Mexico, the government of British Colombia, the North American Development Bank and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos internacionales.

NAFI is a non-profit organization devoted to developing North American dialogue and networks and at publicizing issues raised by North American integration.
